My Fellow Inhabitants

For 18 years I have cared for bare farmland around my house in a wildlife friendly way by planting hundreds of native trees, shrubs and plants. The rewards have been great.

In autumn a ‘charm’ of goldfinches feeds on the seeds in the wildflower meadow and many other creatures have made this place their home.

This project is what made me take up photography , now ten years ago.

Herewith a brief series on the fellow creatures that tolerate my presence!

Firstly the meadow, a glorious site in summer; brimming with Bees, butterflies.

Crickets, snakes, mice, voles and all creatures common to this part of the UK.

  1. Haha! Paula!!! >>> there is not the slightest doubt that of the few blogs I’ve decided to follow recently, your’s is the one that has brought me the greatest surprises and pleasure! I’m biased by my naturalist background, but the simple fact is that these pictures are stunning – what more can I say? The goldfinch flock shot is good, it reminds me of so many days out in the country. But the six portraits are simply superb – I’d LOVE any one of these, blown up large, on my living room wall!

Right, technicalities. Without invading your privacy, roughly where are you? Really out in the wilds, or in a more agricultural area? And what photo gear are you using? How direct can I get??? The bokeh on a couple of these – the Charm and the badgers – looks almost like something approaching a mirror lens, but I don’t think it is. And your handling of the black and white processing is – wow!

And what a change in genre from the Three Graces – I look forward to seeing many more of your photographs. Adrian

  2. All stunning, buzzard and goldfinch are favourites. I love birds of prey, but also the tiniest birds occupy a soft spot. And the frost really adds something special to this. How you managed to capture three is amazing, and more so the way one is being watched by his/her pals.
