Ha, ha….indeed…and it is the reason I choose this area when making my big move 18 months ago from beautiful Devon…lovely area and lot of hills but killing for cycling. This area of the large county of Somerset is reclaimed land:
During the Middle Ages the monasteries at Glastonbury, Athelney and Muchelney drained and looked after the land. Dutch engineers arrived to drain the Levels in the 17th Century. Farmers have managed the landscape ever since, with a little help from the Dutch!!!
